Since ancient times, men and women have been practicing the art of acting, playing the role of a character in a story to entertain the audience. Why just read the story when you can take part in it, role playing and turn it into a display capability?
Actors have found various mediums over the centuries, from voice acting on radio, theatre acting and cinema. From the Latin word agere meaning “to do” (see Wikipedia), actors literally play a role, speaking written dialogue and physically performing in a way that the character would. In most acting, a director is present, whose job is to tell the other actors what to do and make sure that the whole act is going smoothly and as the writer of the scenario wanted.
Among the hundreds of forms of opera throughout China, Beijing Opera has the greatest influence and is therefore regarded as a national form.
Beijing Opera is a comprehensive performance art that combines music, singing, dialogue, pantomime, acrobatics and martial arts. Hence, an actor or actress of Peking Opera has to meet more requirements than in other forms of performing arts. He or she has to be a performer, singer and dancer at the same time. It usually takes the student more than ten years of training to learn singing and acrobatic skills. Therefore, it is difficult to be an artist skilled in Peking opera.
Symbolism prevails in Beijing Opera. The stage of Peking Opera has no limits of space or time. You can be the setting for any action. The interpreter performance is primarily a pantomime. Footwork, gestures, and various kinds of body movements can portray and symbolize the actions of opening a door, up a hill, climbing stairs, or rowing a boat. When a girl is doing needlework, she has neither a needle nor thread in her hands.
These days simply being a good actor is not really enough to succeed in this “dog eat dog” profession. There are people out there who literally would give his right arm to gain a foothold in showbiz. Well, maybe that’s a little extreme, but I think you can see the point I’m trying to do here.
If it’s any cancellation, however, was his chance years ago even less to start an acting career. For starters, there was the equity loop hole. You could not get a job because he was not a member of equity and could not join equity if I had a job .. Aaahhh!
Fortunately, it is now possible to work in professional productions without the need to be a member of the equity. I still think it is a great advantage of being a member of equity, as it is of much help and advice that the union can offer so if you have the option to join you would do well to take advantage of it.
